En d\u00e9couvrant le noyau atomique en 1897, Rutherford permet l&rsquo;essor du mod\u00e8le plan\u00e9taire Newtonien : un ensemble d&rsquo;\u00e9lectrons gravitent autour du noyau comme des plan\u00e8tes autour d&rsquo;une \u00e9toile. On distingue les <strong>mol\u00e9cules<\/strong>, qui sont neutres, des <strong>ions polyatomiques<\/strong>, qui sont charg\u00e9s. Les liens qui maintiennent les atomes dans cette disposition bien d\u00e9finie sont appel\u00e9s <strong>liaisons chimiques<\/strong>. La nature de ces liaisons a \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e9tudi\u00e9e par Lewis (1875-1946, physicien et chimiste am\u00e9ricain) en 1916 pour d\u00e9crire la structure des entit\u00e9s chimiques mol\u00e9culaires, description toujours utilis\u00e9e aujourd&rsquo;hui m\u00eame si on connait ses limites. Plus ces interactions sont nombreuses et fortes, plus la coh\u00e9sion de la mati\u00e8re est importante.
